| BIRTH OF SHARE AND CARE FOUNDATION:
On a Sunday of summer 1982, five professional couples gathered for a casual dinner in New Jersey. Their professional experiences included business, medical, accounting and finance. As they dined, a discussion was initiated on carrying out a charitable work for the homeland India. In fact, such a conversation was going on for last three years. To this process of thinking an inspirational booster was provided by a veteran diamond merchant, who suggested to begin with, collecting used clothes, medical equipment, and milk powder for the needy people of India. One of them supported the idea by saying, "Many of us have immigrated to USA and, now that we have established well, why not do some thing for India". Another person pushed the idea further by saying, "We talk a lot, now we should act". Everyone started thinking seriously on this matter and the seed was planted.
Legal and other formalities were addressed and a search began for a suitable name of the organization. Many names were proposed but none conveyed the idea they had in mind. However, an instant agreement reached when a suggestion came for "Share and Care Foundation". Everybody echoed, "That's it! The name is self explanatory for our ideals of sharing what we have and caring for needy people". The charitable work was initiated by the members contributing $500 by each. The certificate of Incorporation was signed on November 26, 1982.
The very first project undertaken was a used clothe drive in the Summer 1983. With high energy and enthusiasm the founding members and their children participated to collect 2,000 pounds of used clothes. In part, this tradition of involving the entire family, parents and children alike, have made the Share and Care Foundation very successful. The clothes were shipped and distributed to needy people in India. The first fund raising program generated collection of $16,000.
The subsequent growth and activities are summarized under milestones |
